If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?

Trigger, gaslight, and narcissist.

These words are so freely thrown around by this younger generation without knowing their true meaning.

“He’s a narcissist.”

Look it up, Samantha. Do you know what that even means? Or are you just throwing labels around cause it sounds good?

“She gaslighted me.”

Did she, now? Or can you not simply stop and think for yourself? Did you realize you made poor judgments, or maybe not the popular choice? And instead of owning up to it, you push the blame?

“That’s so triggering.”

Does it? Or does it just make you feel uncomfortable? Bet that’s it.

Don’t get me wrong. There are instances when all of these words are appropriate. But they are not meant to just throw around. And yet.. here we are. Doing just that.

It’s a disgrace to people who actually use these words at the right time, in the right place.

  1. I definitely know what narcissist means because I was married to one for 30 years. Until I learned what narcissism is, I struggled to understand why he had absolutely no empathy, not even for his and daughters.

    1. Please don’t think I’m discrediting your experience. That’s not my intent for anyone by this post.
Do you see the use of it in younger generations so frivolously though?

      1. I’m not sure. I don’t have much contact with younger people. I know my daughters don’t use it and they are 41 and 37.
